Well-Being While Siteseeing

Hello all! If you want suggestions for a few MUST SEE spots in Ireland, I would highly recommend taking the trip to the Aran Islands and going to the Cliffs of Moher. You will not regret going, but you WILL regret not going! Inishmore is the largest of the Aran Islands includes a nice ferry ride, a tour bus that takes you all around the island and drops you off to hike up a trail to Dun Aengus, an old fort that dates back to the Bronze Age! Being at the top of the cliffs and seeing the sea stretch out forever was breathtaking and made me wish I could stay up there forever!

The main reason that I bring these two places up is that they both relate to the UN Sustainable Development Goal number three, Good Health and Well-being. Now, I know what you all are thinking: how can these two awesome tourist sites have anything to do with a person’s health and well-being? They are both extremely high cliffs and people are known to either accidentally fall or purposefully jump from the top. I know it is much easier to talk about the universal healthcare that Ireland has, but I think it is important to recognize that sites like these also care about people’s well-being.

Our tour guide cautioned us about the little voice in the back of a person’s mind that can encourage one to jump. Before getting to the Welcome Center at the Cliffs of Moher, there are two relaxation and meditation rooms. They have soothing music, are private, and have information flyers for people with depression and/or suicidal thoughts. Inside the Welcome Center, everyone is warned to stay away from the edge because the wind is strong and can blow a person over. At the Cliffs, there is a marker in memory of all those who have died there. It was very solemn and showed me just how important the Irish take mental health.
