Oh the places you’ll go!

Prato!

This second week has been full of traveling throughout Italy which has brought me new experiences such as visiting historical sites, missing trains, sight seeing beautiful sceneries and tasting the local cuisine of every city. So far I have been to Siena, Pistoia, Prato, and Venice. Out of all the places I have been to, I enjoyed Siena and Venice the most.  I went to Siena the day before the Palio took place.  The Palio is a horse race that involves the twelve contrade which are the different districts. This event is Siena’s Superbowl and this is no exaggeration. Everyone was wearing scarves around their necks to represent the contrade they were from, people were singing and marching in the streets, and there were tables set up at the center of every district to set up for the dinner held the night before the Palio. I really appreciated their passion for their district and how a medieval tradition can still be celebrated years later. If you ever find yourself in Italy, Sienna is a must.  I visited Venice for a day and I have to admit that the journey to get there was full of mishaps, but it was well worth it. It sounds like a cliche, but Venice is everything I imagined and MORE. I fell in love with the tight and winding streets, the different forms of transportation in the canals, and the Piazza San Marco. I took a water taxi to go to Murano Island which is known for their famous glass blowing products. I loved Venice and I plan on going back to explore further because I feel with a city that has so much to offer I definitely did not do enough.

I decided to spend Sunday back in Florence because with the excitement of traveling to new places and being busy with school through out the week has made me forget about exploring the city I am living in further. I decided to go an afternoon mass at the Cattedrale Santa Maria del Fiore and I went to an outdoor movie that is free to the public for the summer. I received some advice to enjoy and get to know the city I am staying in. It is important to remember to balance seeing new sights but also not forgetting about what you have in front of you. I have enjoyed seeing the different cities of Italy and there is still so much to see in Florence!

  1. Those experiences sound amazing, and the Palio sounds almost like a futbol match, but even more exciting! I’m glad you’re finding your balance between work and play. Exploring is super important, and needless to say, really fun.
